It’s been one whole year since the Mac Mini has been updated. It still sports the old Intel integrated graphics and the old Core 2 Duo processor, leaving the product virtually dead. Let me recap: the idea of the Mac Mini is great, consumer version of the Mac Pro and very small and compelling to people who want a taste of the Mac and iLife. It is also very good for people who already have a keyboard and mouse lying around. The Mac Mini is also the cheapest Mac to date. The idea is an excellent one, but the product isn’t that good. The Mac Mini has basically the same specs as the MacBook, but in a desktop. I don’t want to have the same specs as in my laptop as in my desktop, because the desktop is meant to be the big old machine that has monstrous power and graphics. As opposed to the laptop which is supposed to be your on the go machine you use when on the road. The Mac Mini’s price is scandalous: 600$ for these notebook specs, you gotta be kidding me… Well as I said : great idea, horrible product. The Mac Mini is also the product that is most loved by it’s owners. Every week I seem to hear people saying good things about this sucker. But with such old specs right now, the Mac Mini will probably not sell until it’s redesign and spec bump. Rumors say that the update may be coming as soon as November 10th. I would be happy to see this old boy get a new “Aluminum” look and much higher specs with the Nvidia 9400M and up to 4GB of ram. Will Apple get it right this time…?

It would be nice to see a redesign but trully, it doesn’t need to be redesigned, just updated. I could see it easily getting the newest Nvidia graphics like everyone has been talking about.
The reason why I’m leary on the whole aluminum would be cost, and how much harder would be make to upgrade if wanted.
A huge reason why I don’t think it’s going to be fully dead, is many many places are using them as backends where they aren’t even seen. They are also used for some web hosting, it’s a perfect format for a webserver, just add in a couple extra hard drives ontop of it and Mac OS X has everything built in. Let’s only hope that it gets updated this month, it will see a huge boom in Mac sales I’m thinking due to Vista.
